Common Technical problems
I’m unable to download the game.
Check your firewall and virus scan - Your best bet in this situation however is to download the game on another connection, as your Internet Service Provider may be sending out a cached, outdated version of the file.
I’m unable to patch the game.

Received a packet that is too large to deserialize
A player posted this in a related thread:

It looks like I fixed my problem.
It was because Windows updated my wi-fi drivers.
I reverted to older ones and game is now downloading.

We're going to investigate further and see if we can stop this happening, but until then, using a wired connection or reverting your wifi drivers should let you patch!
The Patcher says 'Installation Directory must be on a local hard drive'
Force the installer to run with administrator privileges.
1. Locate the MSI installer file that you downloaded.
2.While holding down the Shift key on the keyboard, right-click on the MSI, then choose Copy As Path.
3. Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories.
4. Right-click on Command Prompt and choose Run As Administrator. This should open a command prompt window, labeled 'Administrator:'.
5. In the Command Prompt window, type msiexec /i (you need to enter a single space after '/i').
6. Right-click in the Command Prompt window, then choose Paste. This should paste the path to the MSI file that you copied in Step 2 above.
7.Press Enter to run the command.
Props to Zubie for posting their solution.
The Patching stops when almost complete
The last few files of the patcher are outside the pack file. This probably means that due to a firewall, virus scan, or administrator privileges, the game can’t place those files. Try enabling exceptions in your security software for Path of Exile’s client, and running the game as an administrator. If that still doesn’t work, try moving your Path of Exile folder to another location.
The patch file is too small
This is usually caused by your internet provider giving you the incorrect file. Your first step would be to run the Pack Check, followed by patching the game again. If doing this then patching the game again doesn't help, this usually means that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is sending you a corrupted copy of the game files that they have cached, or your virus scan is preventing the game from patching. Downloading the game on another system and copying it over would be your best bet. Please email chris@grinding-gear.com with the name of your ISP, and we'll try and figure out which provider has bad cached copies of the game.
Edit: PDoughboy has come up with a guide on how to work around some of the problems caused by your ISP. You can find this guide here.
The Patcher is unable to connect
Check your connection, and make sure you’re still able to connect to pathofexile.com. You may need to contact your Internet Service Provider.
The Patcher stops with an error at a random point
The patcher will continue from where it left off, the % value it shows is the remaining download. This may happen if you lose connection for a second, but should go through eventually. If it is too frequent, check your firewall, virus scan, and if that still doesn’t help contact your internet provider, or download on another connection.
The patcher says “Could not overwrite executable with new patched executable or 'Timed out waiting for patching process to exit'
Go into your Path of Exile folder, usually in Program Files/Grinding Gear Games/Path of Exile.
Make sure you have a file called Client.tmp
Remove your Client.exe file, and rename Client.tmp to be Client.exe
That should solve the problem!
If this happens every time you patch, you may want to check that your firewall or virus scan aren't causing problems for the game client.
The Patcher freezes and crashes every time.
This is usually caused by Pack Corruption. Your first step would be to run the Pack Check, followed by patching the game again. If that fails, you’ll need to remove the content.ggpk file and reinstall the game. If a fresh copy of the game is still having errors, this usually means that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is sending you a corrupted copy of the game files that they have cached, or your virus scan is preventing the game from patching. Downloading the game on another system and copying it over would be your best bet. Please email chris@grinding-gear.com with the name of your ISP, and we'll try and figure out which provider has bad cached copies of the game.

The client won’t load.

It stays on the Loading screen indefinitely
There is probably an error you can’t see behind the Path of Exile window. In full-screen mode, you will need to Alt-tab to see what this error says. Chances are, you’ll find that your pack file has become corrupted, and you’ll need to run the Pack Check
Nothing happens when I click “Launch”
Check that your virus scan or firewall isn’t interrupting the game, and check your processes (Found in the Ctrl-Alt-Delete menu) to see if the game is still loading in the background. If it looks like nothing is happening, try running the Pack Check.
I get an error message when I run the game.

“The protocol is out of date”
Pack Check and potentially reinstall. This error technically means you need to patch. It also happens if you have a virus that has infected Client.exe
'Error: failed to initialise'
This is usually related to the language profile of your keyboard.
Switching it to US/UK English, removing the other language profile then adding it again should fix this crash. Thanks to Enoki for this!
D3D device error
Check your graphics card can handle Pixel Shader 3.0
Check that your PC isn’t defaulting to the Integrated card, which can usually be done by right-clicking on the Path of Exile shortcut and choosing to run the game with the dedicated graphics card.
You may have an old production_config.ini file in Documents/My Games/Path of Exile. Remove this file and try loading the game again.
You may also need to run the installer a second time, and check that you have the correct installation of Direct X.

Some areas always crash when loading (Eg: Chamber of Sins, Lunaris Temple Level 3)
This is often caused by your computer running out of RAM, or a corrupted packfile. See the solutions directly below.
I get an error message and a crash after playing the game for a while.
EOUTOFMEMORY or Unable to Map File or Unable to MapViewOfFile
This usually occurs when your game file runs out of ram, common on PCs with low ram or running 32bit versions of windows. Running the game with Texture Quality set to Medium usually fixes this, though having less than 4gb of ram will cause problems after changing areas a number of times. We will improve the memory recovery system in future.
You can also reduce the rate of these crashes slightly by adding -gc 2 to the end of your Path of Exile shortcut target, as shown here:
You can enable the -gc 2 switch by right clicking Path of Exile in your Steam Library and selecting Properties -> General Tab -> Set Launch Options. Here you can add -gc 2.

If you are still having frequent crashes, you can turn your Texture Quality down even further by manually editing the production_Config.ini file. You can find this file in your Documents/My Games/Path of Exile folder. If you find the line texture_quality=1 and change the number to 2, you'll reduce the texture quality even further. Note that this may make it much harder to see some enemy spell effects.

When I load the game, I get a message saying “Unable to render water”
Your graphics card may not have certain tech required to render some parts of the game. It may not work at all, or you may simply not see any water. Different drivers for your graphics card can let you play, though there will still be issues.
I frequently get an explosion of graphical glitches, followed by a crash.
This will happen if your graphics card is overheating. Monitor your card temperature, and make sure Vsync is on if it is getting too hot. Cleaning out your PC fans and manually capping framerate will also drastically reduce card temperatures.
I get disconnected while running the game
While changing areas
Check the message you’re getting after the disconnect. If you get a message about “Terrain Generation is out of sync”, this is an error we’re working on fixing in the immediate future. Ctrl-clicking the door will let you create a new area that doesn’t have this crash.
This can also happen if your game spends a very long time on a loading screen, more than 40 seconds. You’ll need to lower display settings to let the game load faster.
At random intervals
This is a problem with your connection to our servers. Try changing your Gateway between America, Europe and Singapore. If all three are still resulting in disconnects, you’ll likely have to check the state of your router and contact your ISP about your connection problems.
I’m getting frequent framerate spikes while playing.
We’re still working on preloading some effects, so you should cast skills like Summon Skeletons that have load-intensive effects before you enter combat. All monster effects will be preloaded in future.
If you have regular framerate spikes, every 2 seconds, then you’ll need to updated your graphics card drivers and adjust your driver settings.
● Check that the GPU isn't overheating: increase fan speed, clean out dust.
● Ensure it's getting enough power (High Performance/Maximum Windows Power Settings)
I’m getting a client crash when I enter a specific area or cast a specific spell.
Check if other players are reporting the same area as a problem. If not, you have Pack Corruption. Your first step would be to run the Pack Check. If that fails, you’ll need to remove the content.ggpk file and reinstall the game. If a fresh copy of the game is still having errors, this usually means that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is sending you a corrupted copy of the game files that they have cached. My UI is blurry and has a low resolution.
Your graphics card is likely overriding the game’s Mipmap settings. Go into your graphics card driver options (found near the PC clock) and find settings related to performance speed or mipmap - Turning the texture quality or mipmap quality to high or removing the override will return the game to normal.
My UI has the wrong images, for example the Health orb being blue.
This can happen when your ISP gives you a cached, broken version of the images used for the UI. If you patch the game on another connection or through a VPN, this should fix the problem. You may also need to run the Pack Check through this VPN.

So with the D3D Problem. I have a AMD Radeon HD 6950 video card and I've tried everything I have found on the forums and the only thing I haven't tried is the setting it to a dedicated graphics card but my computer doesn't have on board graphics.

My issue is that I get disconnected ALL the time. When it happens I get this message: An unexpected disconnection occured.
The disconnection happens at random interval so I read this:
'At random intervals

The thing is, there is nothing wrong with my router, I have been in contact with my ISP and there is nothing wrong with my connection. I can play other games online just fine. And my friend whom I was supposed to play with have the same exact problem, and we dont even have the same type of router or IPS. (I have a DSL line 10/1, and he has fiber (100/100).
The problem still occurs when changing gateway from Europe to America or Singapore.
What could the problem be?
I really would like to play the game, but when I get disconnected every minute or so it's not possible..

APPLIES TO: Azure SQL Database Azure SQL Managed Instance

You receive error messages when the connection to Azure SQL Database or Azure SQL Managed Instance fails. These connection problems can be caused by reconfiguration, firewall settings, a connection timeout, incorrect login information, or failure to apply best practices and design guidelines during the application design process. Additionally, if the maximum limit on some Azure SQL Database or SQL Managed Instance resources is reached, you can no longer connect.

Transient fault error messages (40197, 40613 and others)

The Azure infrastructure has the ability to dynamically reconfigure servers when heavy workloads arise in the SQL Database service. This dynamic behavior might cause your client program to lose its connection to the database or instance. This kind of error condition is called a transient fault. Database reconfiguration events occur because of a planned event (for example, a software upgrade) or an unplanned event (for example, a process crash, or load balancing). Most reconfiguration events are generally short-lived and should be completed in less than 60 seconds at most. However, these events can occasionally take longer to finish, such as when a large transaction causes a long-running recovery. The following table lists various transient errors that applications can receive when connecting to SQL Database

List of transient fault error codes

Error codeSeverityDescription
406016Cannot open database '%.*ls' requested by the login. The login failed. For more information, see Errors 4000 to 4999
4019717The service has encountered an error processing your request. Please try again. Error code %d.
You receive this error when the service is down due to software or hardware upgrades, hardware failures, or any other failover problems. The error code (%d) embedded within the message of error 40197 provides additional information about the kind of failure or failover that occurred. Some examples of the error codes are embedded within the message of error 40197 are 40020, 40143, 40166, and 40540.
Reconnecting automatically connects you to a healthy copy of your database. Your application must catch error 40197, log the embedded error code (%d) within the message for troubleshooting, and try reconnecting to SQL Database until the resources are available, and your connection is established again. For more information, see Transient errors.
4050120The service is currently busy. Retry the request after 10 seconds. Incident ID: %ls. Code: %d. For more information, see:

4061317Database '%.*ls' on server '%.*ls' is not currently available. Please retry the connection later. If the problem persists, contact customer support, and provide them the session tracing ID of '%.*ls'.
This error may occur if there is already an existing dedicated administrator connection (DAC) established to the database. For more information, see Transient errors.

The service is busy processing multiple create or update requests for your subscription or server. Requests are currently blocked for resource optimization. Query sys.dm_operation_status for pending operations. Wait until pending create or update requests are complete or delete one of your pending requests and retry your request later. For more information, see:

422116Login to read-secondary failed due to long wait on 'HADR_DATABASE_WAIT_FOR_TRANSITION_TO_VERSIONING'. The replica is not available for login because row versions are missing for transactions that were in-flight when the replica was recycled. The issue can be resolved by rolling back or committing the active transactions on the primary replica. Occurrences of this condition can be minimized by avoiding long write transactions on the primary.

Steps to resolve transient connectivity issues

  1. Check the Microsoft Azure Service Dashboard for any known outages that occurred during the time during which the errors were reported by the application.
  2. Applications that connect to a cloud service such as Azure SQL Database should expect periodic reconfiguration events and implement retry logic to handle these errors instead of surfacing application errors to users.
  3. As a database approaches its resource limits, it can seem to be a transient connectivity issue. See Resource limits.
  4. If connectivity problems continue, or if the duration for which your application encounters the error exceeds 60 seconds or if you see multiple occurrences of the error in a given day, file an Azure support request by selecting Get Support on the Azure Support site.

Implementing Retry Logic

It is strongly recommended that your client program has retry logic so that it could reestablish a connection after giving the transient fault time to correct itself. We recommend that you delay for 5 seconds before your first retry. Retrying after a delay shorter than 5-seconds risks overwhelming the cloud service. For each subsequent retry the delay should grow exponentially, up to a maximum of 60 seconds.

For code examples of retry logic, see:

To resolve this issue, contact your service administrator to provide you with a valid user name and password.

Typically, the service administrator can use the following steps to add the login credentials:

  1. Log in to the server by using SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS).

  2. Run the following SQL query in the master database to check whether the login name is disabled:

  3. If the corresponding name is disabled, enable it by using the following statement:

  4. If the SQL login user name doesn't exist, edit and run the following SQL query to create a new SQL login:

  5. In SSMS Object Explorer, expand Databases.

  6. Select the database that you want to grant the user permission to.

  7. Right-click Security, and then select New, User.

  8. In the generated script with placeholders (sample shown below), replace template parameters by following the steps here and execute it:

You can also use sp_addrolemember to map specific users to specific database roles.

    Note

In Azure SQL Database, consider the newer ALTER ROLE syntax for managing database role membership.

For more information, see Managing databases and logins in Azure SQL Database.

To work around this issue, try one of the following methods:

  • Verify whether there are long-running queries.

    Note

This is a minimalist approach that might not resolve the issue. For more thorough information on troubleshooting long running or blocking queries, see Understand and resolve Azure SQL Database blocking problems.

  1. Run the following SQL query to check the sys.dm_exec_requests view to see any blocking requests:

  2. Determine the input buffer for the head blocker using the sys.dm_exec_input_buffer dynamic management function, and the session_id of the offending query, for example:

  3. Tune the head blocker query.

If the database consistently reaches its limit despite addressing blocking and long-running queries, consider upgrading to an edition with more resources Editions.

For more information about database limits, see SQL Database resource limits for servers.

Error 10929: Resource ID: 1

10929: Resource ID: 1. The %s minimum guarantee is %d, maximum limit is %d and the current usage for the database is %d. However, the server is currently too busy to support requests greater than %d for this database. See http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=267637 for assistance. Otherwise, please try again later.

Error 40501: The service is currently busy

40501: The service is currently busy. Retry the request after 10 seconds. Incident ID: %ls. Code: %d.

This is an engine throttling error, an indication that resource limits are being exceeded.

Error 40544: The database has reached its size quota

40544: The database has reached its size quota. Partition or delete data, drop indexes, or consult the documentation for possible resolutions. Incident ID: <ID>. Code: <code>.

This error occurs when the database has reached its size quota.

The following steps can either help you work around the problem or provide you with additional options:

  1. Check the current size of the database by using the dashboard in the Azure portal.

    Note

To identify which tables are consuming the most space and are therefore potential candidates for cleanup, run the following SQL query:

  2. If the current size does not exceed the maximum size supported for your edition, you can use ALTER DATABASE to increase the MAXSIZE setting.

  3. If the database is already past the maximum supported size for your edition, try one or more of the following steps:

    • Perform normal database cleanup activities. For example, clean up the unwanted data by using truncate/delete, or move data out by using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) or the bulk copy program (bcp) utility.
    • Partition or delete data, drop indexes, or consult the documentation for possible resolutions.
    • For database scaling, see Scale single database resources and Scale elastic pool resources.

Error 40549: Session is terminated because you have a long-running transaction

40549: Session is terminated because you have a long-running transaction. Try shortening your transaction.

If you repeatedly encounter this error, try to resolve the issue by following these steps:

  1. Check the sys.dm_exec_requests view to see any open sessions that have a high value for the total_elapsed_time column. Perform this check by running the following SQL script:

  2. Determine the input buffer for the head blocker using the sys.dm_exec_input_buffer dynamic management function, and the session_id of the offending query, for example:

  3. Tune the query.

    Note

For more information on troubleshooting blocking in Azure SQL Database, see Understand and resolve Azure SQL Database blocking problems.

Also consider batching your queries. For information on batching, see How to use batching to improve SQL Database application performance.

Error 40551: The session has been terminated because of excessive TEMPDB usage

40551: The session has been terminated because of excessive TEMPDB usage. Try modifying your query to reduce the temporary table space usage.

To work around this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Change the queries to reduce temporary table space usage.
  2. Drop temporary objects after they're no longer needed.
  3. Truncate tables or remove unused tables.

Error 40552: The session has been terminated because of excessive transaction log space usage

40552: The session has been terminated because of excessive transaction log space usage. Try modifying fewer rows in a single transaction.

To resolve this issue, try the following methods:

  • The issue can occur because of insert, update, or delete operations.Try to reduce the number of rows that are operated on immediately by implementing batching or splitting into multiple smaller transactions.

  • The issue can occur because of index rebuild operations. To work around this issue, make sure the number of rows that are affected in the table * (average size of field that's updated in bytes + 80) < 2 gigabytes (GB).

    Note

For an index rebuild, the average size of the field that's updated should be substituted by the average index size.

    Note

For more information on troubleshooting a full transaction log in Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance, see Troubleshooting transaction log errors with Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance.

Error 40553: The session has been terminated because of excessive memory usage

Crash

Cannot open database 'master' requested by the login. The login failed

This issue occurs because the account doesn't have permission to access the master database. But by default, SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) tries to connect to the master database.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. On the login screen of SSMS, select Options, and then select Connection Properties.

  2. In the Connect to database field, enter the user's default database name as the default login database, and then select Connect.

Confirm whether an error is caused by a connectivity issue

To confirm whether an error is caused by a connectivity issue, review the stack trace for frames that show calls to open a connection like the following ones (note the reference to the SqlConnection class):

When the exception is triggered by query issues, you'll notice a call stack that's similar to the following (note the reference to the SqlCommand class). In this situation, tune your queries.

For additional guidance on fine-tuning performance, see the following resources:

Steps to fix common connection issues

  1. Make sure that TCP/IP is enabled as a client protocol on the application server. For more information, see Configure client protocols. On application servers where you don't have SQL tools installed, verify that TCP/IP is enabled by running cliconfg.exe (SQL Server Client Network utility).

  2. Check the application's connection string to make sure it's configured correctly. For example, make sure that the connection string specifies the correct port (1433) and fully qualified server name.See Get connection information.

  3. Try increasing the connection timeout value. We recommend using a connection timeout of at least 30 seconds.

  4. Test the connectivity between the application server and the Azure SQL Database by using SQL Server management Studio (SSMS), a UDL file, ping, or telnet. For more information, see Troubleshooting connectivity issues and Diagnostics for connectivity issues.

    Note

As a troubleshooting step, you can also test connectivity on a different client computer.

  5. As a best practice, make sure that the retry logic is in place. For more information about retry logic, see Troubleshoot transient faults and connection errors to SQL Database.
